Beaumaris Pickleball surprised everyone, including themselves by winning the intermediate teams challenge event on Saturday the 15th 2022 in Drysdale Victoria. It was a great day and lots of fun with 128 competitors coming from all over Victoria to compete in the event. The day started with a briefing from the tournament organisers Pickleball Victoria, then it was all systems go.
The play started at 10.00 am with a round robin with each team playing the other teams in the pool Each team had to play a men’s doubles, ladies doubles, and two mixed doubles against each opposing team. The top two teams at the end of the round-robin advanced to the semi-finals.
There were a few nerves shown by all players in the first few games but it didn’t take long for everyone to get into the groove. Team Beaumaris consisting of David Lurie, Grant Earny, Doone Ballantine and Olivia Ballantine won all their matches and finished on top of their pool.
The semi-final was played against a very good team from Warnambool Pickleball Club. It was a battle right from the start with each match experiencing long rallies, lots of winners and very close scores. The semi-final finished with 2 games each, which meant the result then went down to points. Beaumaris got up on points 34-33 and advanced into the final.
The final went down the wire against High – T from Heathmont and every player from all teams showed why they were playing in the gold medal match. Just about every point saw 10-plus shot rallies and the scores were close all the way. Team Beaumaris displayed some great composure holding out to win 3 out of the 4 matches to clinch the gold medal.
Not bad for a team that has only been playing pickleball for less than 4 months.
