The basics

Pickleball, answered.

What is pickleball?

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in Australia. It combines elements of tennis, ping-pong and badminton — the rules are simple and it's easy for beginners to learn, but it develops into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

It's a great workout, suitable for all ages and fitness levels, social and genuinely addictive once you start.

Where did pickleball come from?

It was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA, by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum, who created the game to entertain their families. Using a badminton court, paddles and a perforated ball, they built a sport that's since become one of the fastest-growing recreational activities in the world — including here in Melbourne.

How do you play, and how do you score?

It's played on a badminton-sized court with a modified tennis net, using paddles and a plastic ball with holes — singles or doubles. The game starts with an underhand serve that must cross the net diagonally and clear the non-volley zone (the "kitchen"). Only the serving team can score. Games are usually played to 11 points and must be won by two.

Where can I learn to play?

Introductory sessions run at clubs across Melbourne and usually cover the rules, scoring, basic strategy and fundamental technique. In under 15 minutes, beginners can start hitting balls and playing matches. Equipment is generally provided and sessions are led by experienced coaches.

See our where to play and coaching pages for beginner-friendly options near you.

Where can I buy a paddle?

Borrowed paddles are fine to start, but your own paddle makes a real difference. HUSTL makes premium performance paddles designed for Australian players, along with balls, nets and accessories shipped Australia-wide.
